I recieved a letter from, Jenny, who I just began sponsoring. She just turned 16 yesterday (YAY!) and she stated in her letter she will graduate this year and she is in third course. I'm not familiar with education in Ecuador and I'm wondering if she means this coming school year, or when children can graduate from school? Or is she talking about graduating CI?

If anyone can help me understand so I can appropriately congratulate Jenny and send her a present!

Thank you,

Corrina

Happy birthday, Jenny! :-) The school year in Guayaquil (Región Costa) starts in May and ends in February. In Quito (Región Sierra) the school year starts in September and ends in June. So it depends where she lives. I believe she is in her last year of "El Bachillerato" which is after the 10 years of basic education. In third grade means that she will become a "bachiller" when she graduates (this June or next February)

Thank you so much! Jenny lives in Quito. So, if she said she is graduating this year, and like you said a "bachiller" does that mean she is totally done with school? How exciting! Thank you very much for your help!

I was able to call CI today and they stated she has graduated primary school. They're looking into whether Jenny wants to attend secondary school : )

I thought she was VERY young to have finished school too, but got confused by her saying that she was in the third grade? Our Geraldin in Guayaquil mentions the grades like being in 8th, 9th etc.

I found this about the school system in Ecuador (Spanish)

http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sistema_educativo_de_Ecuador??

Preparatoria, 1. grade of E.G.B (Educación General Básica). Kids will normally start when they are 5 years old.
Básica Elemental, 2º., 3º. y 4º. grade of E.G.B., 6 - 8 yeras old.
Básica Media, 5º., 6º. y 7º. grade of E.G.B. 9 - 11 years old.
Básica Superior¸ 8º., 9º. y 10º. grade of E.G.B. , 12 a 14 years old
El Bachillerato:
Until 2011 you could become a bachiller with specialization in: physical-mathematical, chemical biologist, social sciences and art. In 2011 the specializations were removed, creating the current Bachillerato General Unificado
(Roughly translated)
"The main reason to remove the specializations is to provide a general education and interdisciplinary preparation in order to guide them to develop life plans and to integrate into society as responsible human beings, critical and supportive. It also aims to develop the learning and citizenship skills and prepare them for the labor market and give access to higher education.
The students must study a number of subjects common to all types of high school and can choose one of the following options:
Bachillerato en ciencias: in addition to the common subjects the students are offered additional training in scientific-humanistic subjects.
Bachillerato técnico: In addition to the common subjects provides training in technical areas, crafts, sports or the arts to enable students to enter the labor market and start social or economic activities.
Once students finish the studies they receive the title " Bachiller de la República del Ecuador". The bachillerato técnico will soon (in 2014)give direct access to the University.
