Hotels in DR Cancel Se requiere un título

For anyone who has visited in DR.... where are the best hotels for me by myself.  My husband and I stayed at the Hilton in years past but it was right downtown and did not feel that comfortable for a woman alone- even to go downstairs while my husband got himself together.  I have been looking at the resort style hotels a little out of the city.  Has anyone got any experience or suggestions?  I have 4 sponsored children in DR and am hoping to visit again this year.
