Just out of curiosity I thought I'd take a general survey...today how old is your sponsored child? (Or for many, your sponsored children).

From oldest to youngest:

13 - Sohail
12 - Francy
11 - Sayonika
9 - Marfel
8 - Habiba, Dulce, Ana, Ada

I have a lot of kids within one year of each other - when they graduate I'm going to be super lonely!

(Edited to update ages)

Stephanie- 13

Alondra- 11

Aneta- 10

I somehow always end up with older children, although it's never planned out that way The youngest sponsored child I've ever had was Aneta who was 9 when I started sponsoring her in April 2010. So none of the children I've ever sponsored have been under the age of 9, yet...

Hello, interesting survey question.

I just started as a sponsor.

My kids in order of age are:

Sankari (India), 17

Eyra (Guatemala), 13

Julieth (Colombia), 12

If I could add a couple more, I'd probably sponsor one in the 15-17 age range and one in the 12-14 age range. Although there is an intriguing Zambian girl, Catherine, age 8, with a perplexed expression that intrigues me. It's an "older" expression than I would expect for a child that age. I don't generally sponsor kids that young, and probably couldn't afford it anyway, but if someone else wants to, that would be great.

Regards, Brightspot

By the way, does anyone know what is the average wait time for a child to get sponsored (especially in particular age groups)?

Jonathan, 8 (Mexico)

He's my only child so far... though I have my eye on 4 y/o Emilio from Mexico as well...

Somewhere there's a post where Debbie had researched the average wait times for first sponsorship, not by age group but by country. I think they varied from 7 - 18 months, depending on the country.

Children are only enrolled between the ages of 2 and 11 years old. Once they are enrolled, they wait for their first sponsor until they begin receiving benefits. But once they have that first sponsor, the emergency fund will ensure that they will continue to receive benefits even if they lose that sponsor.

So children over 12 you see on the site will almost certainly have had a sponsor before and be receiving benefits already. Younger children, maybe-maybe not. (Very young children, probably not.) The large majority of sponsors don't make an effort to form a relationship with their child, so it's the benefits that are the main thing. Children aren't told when they lose a sponsor, except that the next time they're required to write a letter, the sponsor has a different name.

Good question! I actually keep my kids' correspondances in order by their ages, so it won't make me think that hard!

*Kimberling in DR-19 this past Novemeber

*Jacquelyn in Philippines-18; will be 19 in 3 weeks

*Emerita in Panama-17

*Leida in Guatemala and Hai Fang in China-15

*Deilyn (Costa Rica), Wilna (Haiti), Astghik (Armenia), Carolina (El Salvador), and Camila (Colombia)-14

*Jazmin (Mexico), my newest addition-14 next Tuesday

*Zinash (Ethiopia)-7

Zinash is the outlier as she was born on the day I was married. :) The others were at least 11 or 12 at the youngest when I started sponsoring them.
