I was just thinking--with all the new high-efficiency bulbs and batteries available, it might be easy to send something better than a flashlight (though I would send a crank flashlight, too! they're ALWAYS useful to have on hand) for after-dark studying and such. There are "tap lights" that we use inside our tents at night at the medieval reenactment events I attend--they have an adhesive tape on the back so they can be stuck to a wall or ceiling, and a single light illuminates the inside of my 10'X10' pavilion really well.
This one, for example, claims to give 100 hours of illumination from 3 AAA batteries (so if you send a pack of batteries with the light, you can give your family several hundred hours of light!): http://smile.amazon.com/Danibos-Stick--Closets-Garages-Storage/dp/B00IUIA73Y/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1399227853&sr=8-5&keywords=tap+light ((I've not used that one personally, but its 9 reviews are all 5-star)). I'm going to order one for myself, though, and see how it works out for camping this summer.
These are the ones I use: http://solutions.blair.com/p/superbrite-touch-light-white/50048.uts I haven't yet had to change the batteries, after three summers of camping (granted, I only have them on for maybe half an hour a night for two weeks ... but that's twenty-one hours so far on the same batteries).
