Hello everyone!
I´m just curious, and hope you can help me to get an idea. What do you think a child can get in India for $100??  My girl is going to celebrate her birthday at the end of this month.

If your child is in Kolkata, your gift should buy a lot. My first $100 eg to my Biswajit bought his family two sets of window shutters with locking flaps. (These were fitted where they originally had empty spaces where the windows should be.) The second gift was used to install a beautiful iron safety gate to their living space, study guides, and Bengali-English dictionaries for Biswajit.
I have also sent Amazon India pantry boxes and the dollar goes a long way.
The boxes have to weigh 8 lbs or less and the locals suggest including canvas shopping bags in your gift to make things easier to carry (if it’s food or hygiene items). I have had a good experience with www.amazon.in
Enjoy!

I sent a $100 EG to Kolkata back in July/August that covered a year of private tutoring for Soumya, who's 12, plus 78 kilos (~170 pounds) of rice for his father to resell at the market. In return, I received a bunch of great photos of Soumya hamming it up with his textbooks, alongside his long-suffering mother. (With some really big bags of rice in the background.) Highly recommended. :) This was an EG that I sent just as a welcome gift and not for a birthday, for whatever that's worth.

I've sent several $100 EGs to my girls in Delhi and Kolkata. The money seems to go pretty far. Families have chosen to use the gifts for tutoring/school supplies, beds, food, clothing, and various home items. When I've sent money for birthdays they've usually also chosen to get at least one "fun" item such as a toy or game. In one case they even used some of the money for supplies for a birthday party! Feel free to look back at my stories for more details of past EGs.

They can get a lot of stuff. Mine have purchased meat safes (a wooden shelf with doors in which to store prepared foods. They have purchased metal wardrobes. They have purchased clothes and food and lanterns and umbrellas. Sky's the limit, really, because the dollar goes a long way there.
