Do any of you have experience with buying a bed for your kids? I'm interested in providing a bed, or at least a mattress, for one of my kids who sleeps on the floor but she only has one room for her family of five so I'm not sure if they even have room. Also, any idea about how much a bed or mattress would cost in India? Thanks!

I've purchased beds in Delhi for families living in one room. They will typically share the bed. Costs have varied depending on the size they have chosen but none have exceeded $100. You might send instructions with the EG suggesting a bed be purchased rather than requiring it.( if space is a problem for them)

I sent an extra gift to Joan in the Philippines (family of 7 sleeping on the floor..) and said that I wanted to help with a better solution for sleeping like bed/matress or any sleeping material that they needed and could place in their house. I could not send more than 100$ but they did buy foam matresses and pillowst and  other items to sleep more confortable. It is maybe not perfect yet but it helps..

Thanks to both of you! I'll probably take your advice and suggest but not require that they use the money toward a bed or mattress.

You could simply write CI and indicate that you're interested in potentially helping with their sleeping arrangements, and if you have a cap that you can spend, so indicate. CI can contact the family and arrive at a joint conclusion of what would work best, and make that suggestion. I'm just saying that CI can help determine what they have room for and tell you what various options may cost. I've pretty much done that with respect to my new sponsored boy in Zambia. I haven't heard back yet. I did send money for my child in Guatemala City. A new double bed cost about $200.

I think it depends greatly on the area and what the family needs.  Aysha's family bought 6 months of tuitions, a new (nice looking) mattress and a fan for $100.

Thanks everyone! I've sent an inquiry though CI so we'll see what they suggest.

I think that bunk beds work the best. Two beds, that only take up the space of one bed. I'm hoping to buy one for Jeremy's family eventually. He has one brother and two sisters. So I figured the boys could share one bunk and the girls could share the other.

When I visited my kids in the Philippines in February, one family of 8 was living in a one-room home, about 12x12'.  The CI staff person recommended we get a double size mattress so several kids could sleep together on it.  The family was thrilled with it, and I didn't ask how they'd decide who would get to sleep in the bed.  I think only 4-5 kids could fit on it.
