If you've set up a visit with your sponsored child and his/her family, you are required to call the SOA in the child's 20 days (I think) prior to your visit so the local staff know you are coming for sure and can finalize plans with the families. This call can be very short, or it might for last several minutes if you and the staff have a lot of questions to ask each other. It also can take time for whomever answers the phone to locate the person you need to speak with.
For some reason, it's taken me a long time to figure out the best and least expensive way to make these calls (l've paid $50+ in the past), but I've finally settled on Skype. Get an account, download the app to your laptop, phone, etc., add some credits to it, and then you're good to go! I recently made my pre-visit call to Ecuador using Skype. I was connected for a little over five minutes, and the call cost just under a dollar. Awesome!
