Dominican Republic sponsors Cancel Title is required

I have been sponsoring a young man  in the DR  since 2006, and a young lady since 2010, and have had the pleasure of visiting yearly. what a joy it is to be a part of there lives. I would be glad to answer any questions about my trips to the DR.

yes I always take gifts. welinton , ball glove and ball when I first met him. he lived with his sister and she has two little girls. after that gifts for the girls also. I got lucky I got 3 kids for 1 in mao. I always include the girls on yearly shopping trips for clothes  and other needs. I always take maple  syrup and honey for I am a beekeeper. so I like to bring the taste of my home. for yadira I always take a piece of fine jewelry and a silver coin from my collection for her treasure box. for she has grown into a beautiful young lady. and take her shopping. of course honey and syrup also.  one thing I do outside of my visits with the kids I have become a drop off for used gloves. every year I take a duffle bag full of gloves with me and a new ball for each one. the best ones are in need of stitching replaced. so I will sit on a park bench somewhere  or near where some kids are playing ball, and restitch a glove and its not long and some curios kid will come by. and next thing ya know some lonely unwanted ball glove is loved again.

Just wanted to introduce myself in this DR-centric thread. This is my first time sponsoring a child and im just here trying to gather information on moving forward. I think its so amazing what you all are doing here. Its been 24 hours or so since I officially started being a sponsor and im already getting attached to my kid lol. I dont know how much of a real difference my sponsorship will make in my kid's life; actually, I feel kind of guilty because I wish I could do more and had the means to sponsor more children. Hopefully as time goes on I can do just that. Im already wondering about items I can send her (Rishell). She's only 2 so any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all that you are doing, and a special shout out to Children Int. for making all this possible.

For my really young kids, I've sent a small teddy bear (and sometimes some "Beanie Baby" stuffed toys - they're small), socks, learning cards, crayons.  You could also consider an SNG (Special Needs Gift) where you provide money for CI to consult with the family and see what things are needed. (It's usually food, clothing, etc.).  You can request that a toy be purchased as a part of the SNG. If you send any gift as a package you will get some pictures back (also for an SNG of $100 or more). Hello, there. I've started sponsoring 4 boys from D.R since January 06. I don't know how this experience is going to be. That is why I would you like to tell me about your experiences. Ill be realy grateful of those who can guide me along this new path with my four young little men.

Hi Cepps31, good initiative. My wife and I have also sponsored a Leanny, a four years old young lady from Dominican Republic. We are from Barcelona, Spain, and we will be very happy to share our experience here. 
We also wrote our first letter to her and her family and we are also now waiting for their fist letter. Do you know how long does it take?
We would like to have experiences on what they are doing in DR and how many centers they have.

Welcome! Leanny is adorable. You will be very happy sponsoring. As far as letters, it's always said six to eight weeks. In my experience it has always taken closer to the eight weeks and sometimes a little longer to get things from the DR. I waited almost exactly eight weeks to get my first letter and I have done a few SNGs and have waited at least eight weeks before getting a follow up. In fact I sent an SNG March 2nd and I just checked on it and was told the follow up is being processed now and I will get it in a few weeks( this week made week eight and I still have a few to wait) but I tell you this not to discourage you but to let you know so that you don't get upset or frustrated just stay patient. I get really good follow up information and the photos that are taken are pretty good quality. My sponsored kid is an older boy and he seems to write to me fairly often. I get good quality information every time I send an inquiry as well. I have looked into sending a DP but the shipping is really high so I stick to SNGs. One more question. Can the same child have several sponsors? Or the they always try to only offer new  sponsorships for kis that do not have any sponsor's yet?
I hope it's the second :-) Otherwise it would unfair.

Only the children in the U.S. Have multiple sponsors at one time. I believe it's four sponsors per child. Children from other countries have only one sponsor at a time. Which is really great in my opinion and one of the things I love about CI. There are a few group sponsored children that you may see talked about on here. Sponsors can team up with each other and sponsor one child, but I have not been part of a group sponsor so I don't have first hand knowledge of it. From what I understand children who have lost their sponsor and children who have never had a sponsor are randomly selected to be put online. This helps keep balance for CI.

When you go visiting the child, I have heard you can stay a full day with them and take them elsewhere, lunch, shopping, parks, etc
I'm surprised about that, is that safe for them? Isn't required the parents approval?
Then, if we want to stay more days in the community, helping somehow, is it possible?
If I go with my child, is it safe?

I signed up this summer to sponsor a 12 year old girl from the Dominican Republic.  I have received my first letter and picture from her.  I went online and just sent her a letter because her birthday just passed.  I definitely would like to learn more about her life in the Dominican Republic and what I can do to help.  I look forward to sharing experiences with you guys.

Hello there, I realize i am very late in posting anything on this message board. Currently I do not sponsor a child in the D.R. but would like to do so as my husband &I have retired and purchased a vacation membership in Punta Cana, D.R.  Does anyone know which is the closest urban community center in the D.R.  I have read that they sponsor in Santiago and also Santo Domingo.  I realize that it would be a bus ride of 2 or so hours from Punta Cana.  Does anyone have a child in an urban setting in the D.R.? I would like to know via the kids' online photos as to which children come from Santiago, Santo Domingo or lastly the rural area in Monte Plaza. My long term goal would be to find a child that's closest to Punta Cana and not so rural as I would prefer to be able to visit my future child in the urban center. The C.I. website says there are 8 community centers and am wondering which is the most urban.  I hope to hear from anyone who has sponsored and visited their child there long term as this is one of my goals in the next few years.
