I know every country has different school ages that children start school. So I was just wondering what the beginning age was in Honduras.

I ask becuase one of my sponsored children from there, Jeimy, is 5 years old and not in school. For school it says- No- unknown.

The one thing I hope for is for each of my sponsored kids to go to school, even if they hate it now it will help out later on. So I'm just trying to figure out it it is an age thing or a money thing or something else.

I don't know, but I'd strongly guess that they don't start them that young.

In Honduras schooling is required for six years beginning at age seven. The school year runs from February to November each year.

Does mean they are only required to go to school until they are about 13 years old? That is concerning to me because of the fact that's not alot of education. Also it seems like my girl Mirna is 13 years old and her older sisters work which makes me think they aren't in school

Joaniedear - since this post was from 2011, thank you for asking for verification. However, Honduras still only requires 6 years of schooling. This is just the minimum requirement – and with our wonderful staff, amazing programs and, of course, fantastic sponsors, our children and youth are encouraged to continue past this. With your concern for Mirna and her sisters, watch for updates on her and feel free to write and ask more about her sisters.I wish I could give you more of a guarantee but the different struggles our families face can be hard for us to understand and we can only offer support and encouragement and trust they make the decisions that are best for their situation.

Hmm, the child I just sponsored is 5 (turns 6 in December) and it says he goes to school? Does it differ throughout different parts of the country?

I don't think so... Most countries are not like the Unites States where each state is like a separate country with its own laws, so I would assume that in Honduras (and almost every other country in the world), the laws are the same throughout the country.

School in Honduras begins at age six, is free and compulsory, BUT there aren't enough schools...
