Kansas City, MO (April 23, 2024) - Children International, a global nonprofit that seeks to transform lives by breaking the cycle of generational poverty, has been awarded a grant from USAID (the United States Agency for International Development) to support the shipment of essential medicines and medical supplies to the Philippines and Zambia.
“We are thrilled to partner with USAID to advance our health equity objective of increasing access to comprehensive health services in underserved communities,” said Christina Becherer, Senior Director of Global Partnerships at Children International. “Donated essential medicines and medical supplies complement our health equity program by filling gaps within health care that we are working collaboratively with Ministries of Health and communities to address.”
Lilian Maambo, a nurse at Kanyama General Hospital in Zambia, has been working in the pediatric department for more than 10 years. In the course of her work, Lilian has often faced challenging conditions where the staff lack what they need to carry out their duties effectively.
“We have a large catchment area [the geographic area from which a hospital can expect to receive patients] in Kanyama and we see many children each day,” Maambo said. “The donations are helping our children and making our work easier. Children International has consistently stepped in to supplement where we fall short.”
Children International’s partnership with USAID, ministries of health, organizations, corporations and communities is a collaborative effort to improve health equity in underserved communities.
Through its health equity program, Children International will help transform the lives of more than 744,000 individuals over the two-year grant period. The nonprofit’s medical product donation program also reaches approximately 40% of the provinces in the Philippines and is expanding throughout Zambia, impacting millions more.
