Reducing educational barriers by boosting literacy

tutoring programs help children THRIVE AND REACH THEIR POTENTIAL

Eleven-year-old Loraine, enrolled in Children International’s tutoring program in the Philippines, fell behind in reading and math. As a result, her confidence and her academic performance suffered. Loraine is hardly alone in her struggles with overcoming illiteracy: The World Bank estimates that 70% of children in underdeveloped nations are not able to read simple texts by age 10. Lacking access to critical resources such as computers, books or academic reinforcement assistance can cause them to fall behind their peers, without the support they need to catch up.

And the research is clear: Literacy and access to quality education are foundational if children are to thrive in all areas of their lives. Education is one of our biggest programs, providing many essential interventions, like tutoring assistance in subjects ranging from math, reading and science to computing and even learning foreign languages.

Together, we’re helping to break educational barriers and boost academic outcomes for tens of thousands of children like Loraine across the globe.

In the past two years, our tutoring program in Bicol, Philippines, has helped more than 5,000 children improve their literacy skills.
